Bessemer started the idea of the companies that you passed on, but ended up doing very, very well.

Here is the Version One anti-portfolio that we have built over the past decade:

Applyboard


We met CEO and co-Founder Martin Basiri in February 2016. Despite his passion for helping international students get into universities and colleges in North America, and having incredible traction early on, we passed because we weren't comfortable with a high AOV / one-time purchase. As of September 2020, the company is valued at $1.4B and has helped 120,000 students identify and apply for 1,200 schools abroad.

Carta


We were introduced to Henry Ward from eShares through our friend Manu Kumar from K9 Ventures in 2013. We loved the product, but weren't convinced it would get much distribution quickly. We were also worried about how much people would pay for it (if at all). Carta went on to become the standard for cap table management and is a unicorn many times over.

Honey


We had a chance to invest in a $500K round at a $12M valuation in 2015. We loved the founders, but didn't have much conviction around the scalability of a browser plug-in and the fact that this was a bridge round. And yeah, $12M felt kind of high :-). Outcome: In November 2019, Honey sold to PayPal for $4B (PayPal's largest acquisition ever at that time).

Instacart


We talked to Instacart's founder Apoorva Mehta after the company went through YC in 2012. Anyone who has ever spent time with Apoorva knows how smart he is, but we were too focused on how how operationally tough it would be to build up such a shopping delivery network. Instacart became a public company with a market cap of over $10b in September 2023.

Scale.AI


With an intro from our good friend Morgan Beller, we met co-founder Lucy Guo at an In-N-Out Burger in July 2016 when the company was going through YC. We had a difficult time wrapping our heads around how to scale a human capital intensive business (i.e. data labelling with mechanical turk). In just 5 years, the company is now valued at $7.3B and is on track to hit an annual run rate of $100M with customers like PayPal, Pinterest, and the US Air Force.

Shopify


We had the chance to invest in the Series B of Shopify in 2011. This was not our early-stage sweet spot and the $100M valuation felt rich. Ten years and $170.9B later, Tobi and Harley built Shopify into the defining e-commerce platform and one of the biggest SaaS success stories ever.

Sonder


We met Sonder's founderFrancis Davidson many times between 2014 and 2016. And, we passed on the opportunity to invest every single time as we were too hung up on their dependency on AirBnB for distribution. In April 2021, Sonder announced that they were going public via a SPAC at a $2.2b valuation.

Wealthfront


In March 2014, Michael Katchen pitched us the idea of bringing Wealthfront to Canada: Wealthsimple would be an online financial advisor that makes investing easy, accessible, and affordable. We passed on the opportunity because we assumed that the Canadian market would be too small for a venture-like outcome - boy, were we wrong: Michael went on to aggressively build up the asset base and add additional products like stock trading and banking services to the platform. In April 2021, they were valued at $4b.


We are sure we have since passed on many start-ups that we will have to add to our anti-portfolio over the next few years. Early-stage investing is not easy and we make a wrong decision every day! But, this list should be a confidence booster to every entrepreneur that gets a no from an investor. Early-stage investors are more wrong than right. A "pass" means absolutely nothing about the future success of your company!

Announcing our investment in Guesser, the easiest way to engage with prediction markets

<span style="font-weight: 400;">We are extremely excited to announce our investment in <a href="http://www.guesser.io">Guesser</a>, the easiest way to engage with <a href="https://www.augur.net/">Augur</a> prediction markets.</span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">Among all the crypto opportunities, we are most excited about</span><a href="https://www.versionone.vc/crypto-native-applications/"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">crypto native opportunities</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> – and prediction markets are clearly native. We spent some time with Augur right after it launched (you can read about that </span><a href="https://www.versionone.vc/a-few-take-aways-from-the-augur-prediction-market/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">initial experience here)</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The potential to create millions of markets around any potential outcome in the world – from sports to elections, weather and stock prices – is pretty amazing.</span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">When I first engaged with Augur eight months ago, two key challenges stood out: 1) the UI / UX was complicated and 2) there were questions about regulation.</span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">Guesser has an answer to both challenges. It has created a super simple interface to interact with Augur, in the same way that Coinbase create the easiest and most beautiful experience to buy and sell crypto currencies. Guesser can make investing in prediction markets as attractive and frictionless as investing in coins and stocks. They began with just a few markets – but it was enough to see the potential. And they’ve just </span>expanded to four dedicated sections for weekly events on Crypto (BTC, ETC, Maker...), Finance (IPOs, derivatives...), Politics and General News. <span style="font-weight: 400;">Secondly, the Guesser team is based in Madrid and European regulators are much more welcoming to crypto start-ups and online betting activity (which some of the activity on Guesser could be characterized).</span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">We led this round of investment (a $1.1m seed round) together with our friends at Compound with participation from Boost VC.</span> <span style="font-weight: 400;">It is very early days for decentralized prediction markets, but we are excited to see the Guesser team shaping some of these opportunities going forward.</span>

A visual guide to pitching

There are many great articles that outline <em>what</em> an entrepreneur should cover during a pitch, but very few discuss <em>how</em> to deliver that message in a compelling manner. That’s why I wrote, “<a href="https://www.versionone.vc/good-story-key-to-pitch/">A good story is the key to any pitch</a>”, earlier this year. I thought I’d revisit this topic with my visual guide to storytelling. At nearly every meeting with an entrepreneur or fellow investor, I’m asked what we are looking for when we evaluate an investment opportunity. The obvious answer is <a href="http://www.inc.com/will-yakowicz/boris-wertz-5-entrepreneurial-traits.html">a stellar team</a>, but there’s more to it than that. Below, I’ve drawn how I map a typical checklist into a framework to help you better understand what we are listening for in a pitch. <center><a href="https://gregburnison.ca/code/version1v/images/Storytelling.0011.jpg"><img class="alignnone wp-image-2157 size-large" src="https://gregburnison.ca/code/version1v/images/Storytelling.0011-700x525.jpg" alt="Storytelling.001" width="700" height="525" /></a></center>So how do you go about painting this picture during your pitch?  Here are some tips: <ul> <li><strong>Start by sharing your vision (the “Why”)</strong>.  I like knowing why a founder is building his or her business. I get excited when I can understand and align myself with the founder’s motivations, values, and overarching views or perspectives of the world. That’s why conveying your vision is the best way to set the stage for your pitch.</li> </ul> <ul> <li><strong>Describe and demo what you’ve build so far (the “What”)</strong>.  The initial validation of your grander vision is your MVP. I always recommend going through a short demo of your product because it provides grounding for your future goals and helps us answer that vital question:  is it possible to be a category leader or is it an unrealistic pipedream?  At Version One, we rarely invest at the ideation stage.  We want to see traction – specifically, how quickly you can capture the initial market or vertical** that you are targeting, and how engaged these early users are.</li> </ul> <ul> <li><strong>Walk through your plan for growth (the “How”)</strong>.  After you demonstrate your strong sense of product design and development, we want to know how you will build a real business beyond just features.  The core questions to answer are therefore on distribution and scale, and on your <a href="https://gist.github.com/ndarville/4295324">business model</a>.  Some example questions include: <em>what are your strategies for customer acquisition?  Paid or organic via network effects? What does your inbound and outbound sales pipeline and process look like?  How can you expand TAM**?  How do you move from building for an underserved user who is most passionate about your product to a greater audience in a more competitive space? Do you </em><a href="https://www.versionone.vc/selling-enterprise-sell-vs-sell-many/"><em>“sell to few” or “sell to many”</em></a><em>?  And how does your product evolve into your grander vision (i.e. your product roadmap)?  </em>We know that a lot changes in a startup’s lifecycle.  While we won’t hold founders to every answer, we certainly want to understand how they think about their business and the opportunities ahead.</li> </ul> **Note:  I’m using the word ”market” or ”vertical” which applies to companies that can expand this way (i.e. Amazon, eBay, etc.).  However, this diagram is still applicable for platforms where there is expansion from a niche audience (by demography, geography) to the masses, and for SaaS, expansion from an individual user or SMB to the enterprise. <strong>Pitch your why, what, and how</strong> Many entrepreneurs make the mistake of pitching to an investor in the same way they sell to a customer. Yes, we invest in companies that are solving a real pain point for the customer and it’s important for us to understand that pain point and how you help. However, we’re investing in the future in addition to what you’ve already built. Sell the “what” as proof that you are onto something big, but always keep in mind that investors are buying into the “why.” There is no doubt that you have epic plans on how you are going to make it happen, now just let us know.
